If you've never heard about it or read it you should go out and get a copy of this book. It's a great summer read because you can take it too the beach and not worry about it getting wet. You could even take it with you into the water. It's a book that's not made from trees and turns the current thinking about how we make things on its' head, but in an economically realistic way.
Cradle to Cradle:
Remaking the Way We Make Things
by William McDonough and Michael Braungart
North Point Press, April 2002

http://mbdc.com/book/index.htm

exam week sucks. stay up late studying, fall asleep over books, wake up several hours later and turn lights off and really go to bed, have to get up in too few hours to actually get a good night's sleep, go to work sometime, try to track down un-reachable professors...soo frustrating. but it's almost over. i have 1 exam tomorrow night and some papers to finish typing up (haven't counted recently to see how many I actually have left). looking forward to going out sat and then going home on sunday. yay! i haven't seen my kitties in like 2 1/2 weeks. i'm not in complete with drawl b/c of all the cats and kittens at work though. work is going absolutely fabulously. i've already got my 1st pay check, 2nd is due this friday AND I got a $250 holiday bonus. after only working for like 3 weeks! i was absolutly shocked when i finally opened my christmas card from the dr boss on sat night (was too tired and tipsy on friday and i forgot) i think i'll actually have enough money to pay my rent and finish buying christmas presents w/o borrowing money from my mom for the first time in 5 months.

Vermin problems- things i don't like about living in the city:
somehow the mice that live here at hunter don't bother me at all but the ones in the apt freak me out. maybe b/c those shit all over our pantry shelves and i'm more grossed out than freaked out. i also think i saw a cockroach on the shelf btwn the dishes the other day but i'm not completely sure since i back away as soon as i saw something moving. when i stopped hyperventilating i reached out just enough to slam the door shut and not look in. so i guess now we need roach traps in addition to the mouse traps. on the up side i don't think we have any mice anymore. i thought there were generally more problems with vermin in the country than in the city but i guess not. or a house full of 4-5 cats took care of everything before anything had a chance to make it into the house is probably more likely. b/c i did see a fair number of rodents at home. they were just already dead and occasionally in pieces. once there were only 2 legs left or a few feathers.

So this post is going to be short even though I have a lot to put in it. That's because I'm typing w/ 1 hand b/c i've had this weird pain alternating btwn my hands for the past 2-3 days and currently the left 1 is un-usable. i'm going to call my pt in the am. In more exciting and happy news I had a blast at the halloween parade last night, then met up w/ my roomie and went out to a bar till 1 or 2 am, got home around 3 and tonight i did really well on my genetics exam!
The other thing that happened today is that it took me 1 hour to get from 59th & lex to Herald Sq. What on earth happened you ask? My dumbass went down to the NRW track to go DOWNTOWN and without looking at the signs on the platform b/c there was an R train there I read the train and it said Bay Ridge/95th st so I got on. Now I had only been down on that platform once before and then it was b/c I was talking to tina and then going down to the 4/5 track and its all stairs going down so why not go thru that way. So that's not really an excuse. So I realized after about 2 mins that I was on my way to queens. So you think I just go back the other way. Oh, no no. I then repeated my 1st mistake of getting on a train w/o 1st reading the platform signs. The E was sitting there across the platform and not thinking about the fact that there were a LOT a people transferring, so maybe it wasn't were I wanted to go until the doors closed. Actually the doors were about 1/2 closed, but I wasn't about to bust out of a subway car with 2 painful hands. So I realized that there were 2 platforms at queens plaza and that I was now on an express farther into queens. So I took the way to Herald sq by way of jackson heights... It was almost 9 when I finally got to Macy's were I was going to get a present for my aunt's wedding shower next weekend. Good they were open till 9:30 and there was an Au bain pain on the floor with the bridal registry b/c I had fully expected to be home by this time. So I had some really good pumpkin soup w/ bread of course and ended up getting her a china place setting that I'm not sure is an appropriate shower gift so it may wait and be a wedding present. then it can wait for my car and not have to take it on the bus which doesn't seem like a smart thing to do. so i'll go back next week and get something that will travel better.
one more note and this is already longer than i thought it would be...
I was about a 1/2 block out of the subway walking home when someone taps my shoulder. now I was momentairly scared until i saw my roomie. she was walking behind me but didn't recognize me until then. don't really know how that happens. i'm a little surprised that it hasn't happened before that we've come home on the same train. I didn't see her b/c I never really looked behind me when coming up or on the street, which is something I usually do do. so that was my night and now that i've been typing only w/ my right hand it hurts more, but then so does my left, so who knows. my first theory is the degenerative disease that's in my knees is affecting my hands and my second is that i have lyme disease. so i hope to find out soon or at least find something for the pain and stiffness that won't either make me nauseous or thin more my already not able to clot properly blood. hmm...slim chances.

Halloween and a memorial to Blackie

    <lj:music>Tori Amos- Little Earthquakes</lj:music>

I'm really excited about Halloween in the city. Adults actually get dressed up and aren't looked at like they're crazy? It's fabulous. I'm going to be the wicked witch of the east. I think it might be the first time i've dressed up as a witch since my cat Blackie died. When I was little I loved being a witch and taking her along trick or treating. She'd let me dress her up and carry her along for longer then any cat sensibly should. I used to put baby doll clothes on her and push her around in my doll carriage/stroller and she would just stay there. She was definitely the best cat a kid could have b/c she really put up with everything. She was as you may have guessed by her name- a black cat (I named her when I was 6) and she had a white star on her chest. Soon after we moved into our apt in Secane in Feburary 1988 I heard a cat crying through the wall by the bathroom. It was were the panel was that hid the pipes to the bathtub. Ours was the 1st fl apt and there used to be storage space in the basement but they had closed it up and there was a crawl-space entrance from outside that was under my bedroom window. So we went outside in the freezing cold and pried the board off that was covering the hole and out came this little black kitten. The maintenance men occasionally went in there and she must have gone in and then been trapped. So needless to stay I was allowed to keep her, especially since it meant I didn't bother Peanutbutter as much. Peanutbutter was my mom's and only my mom's cat. And yes, I named her too. when I was 5 b/c she would eat peanut butter off my fingers. She hated kids all her life and would always run from me, although not as much when I got older and didn't try to play with her as much. She was a tortiseshell and our present cat Ginger is very much like her.
So back to halloween- I still have my witch's hat to which I am attaching bobby pins to hold it on my head that has grown just a little in 15+ yrs but it mostly still fits. I am also going to kill myself in 4in sparkly red heels that were my inspiration for the costume. they look like the ruby slippers from the wizard of oz and there are only 2 characters that wear them- the witch of the east up to when Dorothy kills her and then Dorothy. I didn't really want to be Dorothy b/c that would require actually buying a costume which since i'm un-employed isn't an option. So I have shoes, black skirt, black top that shows cleavage nicely and a hat and small size broom. So i go with the witch and go for movie, not book accuracy. Because in the book, for those who may not have read it and you should b/c it's really good and there are 6 other books after it in the series, the slippers are silver and the witch carries an umbrella. this goes along with her phobia of water (it's more than a fear since it will rightly kill her, but can a phobia be of something real and not imagined? hmm...). So since I don't have my silver shoes here and most people wouldn't recognize the reference I went for movie accuracy. I'm going to wear my black clogs to school though and change after class. I found black and white stripe stockings at Ricky's and they are great except i'm going to have to go back for some of that double-sided body tape b/c they won't stay up and don't have any kind of silicone or sticky stuff on them like other pairs of thigh-highs i've had. I also got some green makeup and glow-in-the-dark paint for my hair that i'm straightening. Oh! a camera, should I just get a disposable or take mine that needs film. it's going to be dark and i'm not sure a disposable would turn out and all the pictures would be too dark or just black. hmm... have to think about that.

Good night and Happy Halloween!!

[Oh and I'm a very bad girl for even going out tomorrow night when I have a genetics exam on thursday night ;-D]

In most cases it won't, so fucking annoy all the people living on the street by needlessly honking and then continue when it's pointless.

Living between 2 pentecostal churches can get loud- really loud. I couldn't believe they were still going at it at midnight on saturday night. I guess there's another reason to go home for the weekend. They are pretty quite during the week, but it seems as if there are people there yelling and attempting to sing all weekend. I guess I just can't see them as Christians, but I don't think they see or would see me as one if they knew what I believe. So I guess we're even on that score.

And why the hell are women so fucking confusing???????

And to anyone in NY- I'm on a baking kick- you better get it while it lasts. Monday will probably be a good day to see me ;o)

    <lj:music>the birds in the trees</lj:music>

So last sunday i moved to an apt in brooklyn. i've started grad school at Hunter college on the upper east side in manhattan. it's definitely going to take some time to get used to living in the city after being a country girl for so long but i'm happy and things are working out. i've already got 2 job leads from the resumes that i sent out friday :o) after i find a job i need to look for another apartment as the one i'm in is going to be okay for the short term but I would like to see if I can find one that's a little more affordable and that i can have a cat in. I realize that mice and giant cockroaches are just part of living in the city, but why should i have to see them when my cats are capable of getting rid of them for me? and i really think that the bunnies would be much happier when they are not brought back and left on the doorstep as presents. the noise i'm still getting used to and although my apt is in a decent neighborhood, it's on a really busy street, one that i didn't realize was going to be so loud w/ so many trucks going by. my roommate is really nice and we're getting along well except is she hasn't done her dirty dishes from last weekend by the time i get back i'm going to say something. i kept quiet all week but coming home and having to clean up after my mom and her dirty canning dishes my tolerance for dirty dishes in the sink is about down to zero. going to lancaster to see my grandparents and get some stuff from their basement tonight and then going back to the city on tuesday morning/afternoon to try and miss all the traffic.

    <lj:music>none right now</lj:music>

so i have an apt in ny to move into, i've talked to one of my advisers at hunter and it's okay that i wait until i move in 2 weeks before i register for classes for the upcoming semester. so far so good. i've also learned that somehow i got registered then unregistered for a class last spring. said registration, which was not by me will now cost me a $65 registration fee that has resulted in a hold on my account. so now i know that i have to pay it, since i had gotten no notice of this previously. also had a very nice picnic in the park dinner while there was a good folk band playing with a very dear friend. the ride home was horrible. the bus was 20 min. late leaving pabt and managed to be 45 min late by the time it got to my stop and my mother was less than happy about picking me up at quarter to 11. it was quarter after by the time i got home as i had to go get my car at the garage where it got inspected today. so somehow even though i originally bought the car in august and that's when i first got it inspected, the damn dot sends me a sticker dated july. so now i'm stuck with july instead of august. if it were august i could just leave it go b/c by that point i won't need a car anymore. but no, the damn dot has to screw me over 2 years later. i finally got my lower balance credit card paid off and now i had to put $700+ of car work on to it. i think this car has cost 2-3 times it's original purchase price of $1500 in parts that have needed to be replaced b/c it's now 14 yrs old and had sat in my great-aunts' driveway for a year before i bought it b/c she could no longer drive at the age of 90. blah. i still have 1 cat box to clean b/f i go to bed b/c of course tomorrow's trash day.

    <lj:music>the dryer buzzing b/c mom didn't turn it off.</lj:music>

i'm driving to ny this weekend on my way to philly. why you ask is ny on the way to philly? b/c there was a mixup between me and dr fab about my reccomendations for grad school and even though i sent it to her a month ago she hadn't done it by monday and to boot she's pissed at me. so i'm praying that i get it by friday b/c everything is supposed to all be in 1 envelope when submitted :-P. so annoying, and such a long drive for someone who doesn't like to drive and whose knees hurt after awhile. but physical therapy is going well and i have an appt w/ the knee dr. on monday. jeez, next week is holy week already. cedar crest is closed on good friday. i found that out on monday and was shocked as i've never gone to school or worked anywhere that has closed on good friday. too bad that i still have to work. but my boss said that it was okay that I leave to go to church at noon. and i have to remember not to schedule a therepy appt for maundy thursday either. so i'm looking forward to seeing kate as it's been awhile and getting drunk as it's been awhile for that too. and getting drunk by yourself or with your cats really isn't much fun. well here's to a fun weekend of driving, drinking, more driving and baptisms!

SO the 2 midterms that I have are after break b/c of the snow and cancelled classes last month. I took my biochem test last wednesday (actually the 2nd out of 4 exams, not including the final) and I got a 76. which in terms of me and biochem is bad. considering that I had a really bad migraine at the time which started the night before when I was studying and I had a very difficult time thinking at all and was dizzy, and seeing stars (the same ones no matter if my eyes were closed or open), and she gave me extra time since there was no way I could finish in 50 min feeling like that I think it is good. i would have gotten an f if she didn't give me more time b/c at that point half the test was still blank. I felt so much worse afterwards due I think to the stress of trying to concentrate so hard that I could drive. so i called security who took me to the health center where i stayed until they closed 4 hrs later and then laid down on the sofa in the security office for another hour and a half before I felt okay to get up and function (walk, drive, see straight). so a total of about 6 hrs recovery time from the exam. just in time to get prepared for my night class which didn't go so bad and i was able to drive home talking to my grandmother b/c i was so tired. but i never have time to talk to her otherwise so that was nice. my stat midterm is due tomorrow. it was take-home and open book/notebook, and not really hard like you would think for a take home exam. whew. b/c i forgot about it until last night and it is really long. need sleep.

so i'm still at home. back in school full-time at cedar crest college in allentown. feels a lot like macon, except not depressing and dying like macon is. i'm still very isolated- don't know many people there yet esp. since i'm not on campus outside classes a lot. the girls in my lab are fun to talk too and i like the girl who sits next to me in genetics class (no, not like that) except i still don't know her name. that's sad when the semester is almost halfway over and i don't know the name of the girl who has been sitting next to me in class 3 times a week. she's in my lab too but sits on the other side of the room. i'd really just like to make a friend who's not really far away. on that depressing note...

So we (my mom and me) are leaving tomorrow for the outer banks of NC. I think i can probably get all the packing done that i need to and my errands (at least the important ones). what i have put off and probably won't finish is the list of housework my mom wants done before we leave. AHH! how i hate housework. i wish i had a magic wand and could wave it at everything, especially the dishes. i can go to bed as soon as my pics finish uploading to yahoo pictures. i backed up all the ones i just transferred from the memory card as it was full and a full memory card doesn't do much good on vacation. since that just about filled up the hard drive i felt the need to back everything up and the cd burner is too much trouble when there isn't enough room on the hard drive. i now only have about 25 pictures to go out of 200. some more computer bitching... when i turned it on it had around 525 MB of free space. after putting 287MB of pictures on it it is now down to just 14 MB of hard drive space. it's amazing that it is still functional but like me with little sleep barely functions as it should. off to whittle my stack of tank tops down and clean off all the piles on my bed into my bag. goodnight all. off without computer for a week.

PS- i wish i could pack Petunia in with my clothes as she is sleeping in the center of my piles. i am going to miss her very much.

it's been a fun if unproductive day

So I slept in and missed church...oh well. i did make myself french toast for breakfast at around 12:30pm. and helped my mom make a coconut custard pie for my grandfather's b-day. we went out to dinner with them later. in between, instead of putting away my piles and piles of clean laundry I im'd with allie while trying to get some other things on this computer to work. On the way home from dinner we took the long, scenic way around. which was okay b/c that way passed the dairy where they make their own ice cream. Eating ice cream while driving isn't so bad until it starts to drip out the bottom of the cone; then it gets tricky. We were on our way to the drive-in movie theater to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and were only 10 minutes late. I loved it as much as the 1st one. I mean what's not to love- hot girls and hot guys, the best of both worlds and it was incredibly funny. then i put off the laundry for another 2 hrs im-ing with allie again. Such a good unproductive day ;o)

Grad school applications suck

I hope graduate school is more interesting and less bureaucratic than the applications are. I can't believe that U of D requires all the paper part of the application to arrive in 1 envelope. this means that i have to get all my reccomendations back before i can mail anything in. this sucks for someone who procrastinates like me. going to bed so that i can get up and go to work in 6hrs.
